Understanding the temperature forecast

The 2m surface temperature is the temperature we experience. Forecasts are at 3-hourly intervals over the 10-day forecast. Longer forecast lead times are associated with lower forecast skill.

Temperature fields are terrain-corrected using a digital elevation model with finer resolution than the underlying GFS terrain. This does not resolve every local variation.

Read the valid date and local time printed on each map. The gallery labels show forecast lead hours, not clock times. Playback follows all 81 frames, including those hidden by the gallery filter.
