Why Chill Hours Matter
Fruit crops such as apples, cherries, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, and grapes require a certain number of winter chill hours to break dormancy and achieve healthy budburst. Insufficient winter chill can lead to poor flowering, uneven fruit set, and reduced yields.
How the Forecast Works
Data is sourced from the Global Forecast System (GFS) model, updated every morning. Chill hours are calculated when forecast temperatures are between 0°C and 7.2°C, summed over the next 10 days. This creates a state-by-state snapshot of projected chill accumulation, helping growers plan orchard management, pruning, and spraying schedules with more confidence.
